AN AMUSING STORY OF DHANADADU
Dhanadadu and his wife Menoka granny were living in a small cottage at Hatkhola village. The village roads were made of mud. Big trees raised their heads on both sides of the roads. Besides, several stray dogs would move here and there. Dhanadadu plough his own land to grow paddy only. Moreover, he was a man of forgetful nature.
On a rainy dusk Dhanadadu went to the village market with his half-broken umbrella and a wallet to bring vegetables in exchange of excess paddy he produced. On his way back home, in the midst of darkness, torrential rain, that started, was soon converted to drizzling. Dhanadadu carried his open umbrella in one hand and the wallet with the other. He was proceeding very carefully step by step. Then all on a sudden, unexpectedly, a rabid dog, probably considering Dhanadadu as a thief with a bag, chased him from behind with continuous barking. Looking back and seeing the mad dog, Dhanadadu got so frightened that he, throwing his umbrella, the wallet and his sandal aside, climbed up a nearby peepul tree. From the top of the tree he faintly noticed below that the dog was still crying showing his canine teeth.
However, there was a short pause. Gradually night deepens. This time Dhanadadu abruptly and frequently began to sneeze producing loud sounds. Hearing the sounds, the dog also resumed barking. This game of sneezing and barking went on for some time. Amidst this Dhanadadu felt drowsy and finally slept clinging a branch of the tree. Then there was a long interval. At dawn, Dhanadadu, forgetting all the incidents of the lunatic dog, came down from the tree and proceeded towards his home. On the way, he met Haripadababu, his friend, who asked him, “Where are you coming from so early in the morning?” Then accidently Dhanadadu recalled the episode of the previous night and fainted on the road out of fear. Haripadababu, with the help of local people, brought Dhanadadu at home. Getting his husband back, Menoka granny breathed a sigh of relief and began to nurse him.                                                                                                                                                [± 345 words]
